Homage to Matthias Grunewald, Isenheim Altarpiece
One giclee print framed 37x31. $800.
This work was conceived in Tahiti in 1992 and completed during Easter 1994.
On these Islands, the men frequently wear leis on their heads at times of celebration.
The vision I had was of Christ bursting from the cross from darkness into light, from sorrow to joy. Instead of a crown of thorns, he wore a crown of flowers. The other side of the cross represents the presence of the Lord.
Hebrews 12:2… who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Artist interpretation of John 20:1-7
In Leviticus 16:4, we are told of the garments of atonement worn by the High Priest of Israel. Once each year in a supreme act of deep adoration and profound symbolism, the High Priest, clothed in these atonement garments, entered the Most Holy Place to offer sacrificial blood for his own sins and for the sins of the people of Israel. The garments he wore were made of raw linen and were declared to be "holy" by the Word of the Lord.
We read in John 20:7, the burial garment of Jesus Christ - the fulfillment of all sacrificial offerings and our Atonement - was also made of linen.
I was told after much searching that according to one ancient Jewish custom a folded napkin left by a visitor is a statement declaring, "I will return.”

Easter to Pentecost
EASTER TIDE to PENTECOST OR PESACH TO SHAVUOTÂ
ACRYLIC MIXED MEDIA ON WATERCOLOR PAPER AND MOUNTED ON A BOARD 24X48
For me a piece of art should stand on it’s own without any explanation yet there are obviously some exceptions. I could have looked at Picasso’s Guernica for years and never understood it until I knew the intent of the artist. Therefore I am sharing my intent with this piece of art, EASTERTIDE!
The liturgical church has traditionally honored Advent 40 days prior to Christmas; Lent 40 days prior to Easter but the days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost have not been celebrated anywhere near to the extent of Advent or Lent. This Season called Eastertide or Paschal Tide is to remember the time between Passover/Easter, and Pentecost (the coming of the Holy Spirit) which covers 50 days/ 7 weeks and corresponds to the pre-existing Jewish feast: the first day of Pesach (Passover) to 49 days latter to the holiday of Shavuot the period known as Counting the Omer. The early church also kept these feast and celebrations. It was my intent in this art piece to illustrate the similarities and richness of these 50 days of many cultures.

Ichabod…the Torn Veil
sold
available as a giclee print on canvas wrapped
15”x30” $350
Original watercolor and gold leaf 70" x 30"
This work came out of a time of pain and being torn apart. Ichabod means the Lord has departed.
The creation of this piece began with researching the Biblical references to the veil, which was torn apart and was what separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place in both the Tabernacle in the wilderness, as well as the ancient Jewish Temple at Jerusalem.
Exodus 26:31-31 gave the description of the materials, the colors, and the images that were to be used in the making of the veil, while the Cherubim were described in Ezekiel 1:4-8, 10. The Cherbuim had four heads, one of a man, one of a lion, one of an ox and one of an eagle. You can only see two in the folds of the material.
The torn veil, symbolic of the broken body of Jesus Christ, having been "torn in two from the top to the bottom" at the moment of His death, revealed to all the priesthood of Israel that the Shekinah Glory of God had departed from their temple 33 years earlier.
The torn veil continues to speak to men today that the way into the Most Holy Place is now open to all. Jesus’ sacrificial death tore the veil of separation and the way to God was opened and open to all.
Matthew 27:51 - ...the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom.
Shadows of the Cross

This inspiration resulted from when I visited the restored St. Michaels’ church which had to be rebuilt due to damage from the 1996 devastated earthquake in Kailua Kona. The cross had multiply shadows on the wall where it hung behind the alter which is what captured me.

WHY ARE YOU LOOKING FOR THE LIVING AMONGST THE DEAD
acrylic/collage 15 1/2” x 34”
During a Lextio Divina meditation on John 11:38-40 when Lazarus had died and was 3 days laying in his tomb. People were waiting outside the tomb to see what Jesus would do. He simply turned to them and said “you remove the stone!”
What came to me from this meditation was Jesus’ own tomb and a sense of a great light coming from the empty tomb and the stone rolled away. So often as it is in art what you start out to create is far from what you end up with… a painting which has a life of its own.
This is what I ended up with. So I will leave it with you and you may ask, why two stones? Could it be another unopened tomb that has a stone in front of it? Or are there stones we need to remove to let the light out? WHAT DO YOU SEE?
HOLY SATURDAY EASTER 2023. 11 1/2 X 16 1/2 acrylic/collage.
In some ways this art piece expresses the feelings I was experiencing on Holy Saturday ... it felt like I was in a liminal space waiting and not not even being able to imagine all the mysteries that were taking place behind that stone.
