Homage to Matthias Grunewald, Isenheim Altarpiece
Original Watercolor 23″ x 17″3/4
This work was conceived in Tahiti in 1992 and completed during Easter 1994. On these Islands, the men frequently wear leis on their heads at times of celebration.
The vision I had was of Christ bursting from the cross from darkness into light; from sorrow to joy. Instead of a crown of thorns, he wore a crown of flowers. The other side of the cross represents the presence of the Lord.
Hebrews 12:2 – Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
