Original Watercolor 11″ x 13.5″
When I moved back to Hawaii in 2009, after living in New Zealand and then S. Dakota, I went down into Waipio Valley where I had lived in the early 1970’s. Often I visited Waipio Valley and thru the years I took many art students down for an art retreat. We would stay at the “exquisite Waipio hotel” owned by Tom Araki, a local taro farmer. In the evenings we would sit with Tom as he drank his Saki and listen to his stories.
This visit, everything was closed up and the taro patch was dry. Tom had passed away in 2000. I went home and dug out an old photo of him from 1980 and created this watercolor, Homage to Tom Araki. I found a relative and gave them a giclee print as well as a close neighbor.
